HMM said CO2 emissions generated per teu of container per kilometre transported by the company had decreased to 29.05g in 2021 from 68.7g in 2010. This represents a 57.7% reduction in carbon emissions over a period of a decade.

HMM credited the reduction in emissions to the deployment of energy efficient mega-containerships which have seen its fleet capacity more than double to from 337,407 teu to 755,209 teu over the period.

The company has also used anti-fouling coatings, retro-fitted bulbous bows, and optimised service routes and speeds.

“We will continue to engage in activities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on data-driven analysis and enhance our environmental capability,” an HHM official said.
