MSC expands inland rail network in Australia
2026-05-03

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has launched an integrated inland rail service across Australia to strengthen end-to-end supply chain resilience and enhance intermodal efficiency. The initiative extends MSC’s domestic logistics footprint by connecting major container terminals—including those in Sydney and Melbourne—with key inland distribution hubs such as Minto, Ettamogah, Griffith, and Bomen.

This rail solution is designed to alleviate pressure on congested coastal road corridors, reduce long-haul trucking dependency, and deliver measurable improvements in transit time reliability, cost efficiency, and carbon intensity. By enabling direct container movement from port terminals to inland depots, the service facilitates faster cargo release, simplifies last-mile coordination, and supports just-in-time inventory management for shippers.

Key operational benefits include:

• A unified de-hire facility accommodating all standard container types (20-ft, 40-ft, and high-cube), minimizing administrative overhead and depot-handling complexity;

• End-to-end single-booking capability—customers specify predefined port-of-discharge and final delivery points, with MSC managing seamless execution across ocean, rail, and terminal interfaces;

• Enhanced predictability through integrated scheduling, reducing delays associated with port congestion, yard dwell time, and fragmented carrier handovers.

The service reflects MSC’s strategic integration of its global maritime network with localized rail and terminal expertise. It aligns with broader industry efforts to advance sustainable, scalable, and digitally enabled intermodal solutions in line with Australia’s National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy.
