MSC updates EFS for Red Sea & East Africa trades
2026-05-12

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced revised Emergency Fuel Surcharges (EFS) applicable to containerized cargo shipments from Northern Europe—including the United Kingdom and the Scanbaltic region—to ports in the Red Sea and East Africa, effective May 16–31, 2026 (based on bill of lading date).

This adjustment follows significant disruptions in global marine fuel markets, driven by recent geopolitical developments in the Middle East. These events have led to sustained increases in Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) prices and constrained bunker supply availability at key refuelling hubs, thereby elevating procurement complexity and operational expenditures across MSC’s network.

The updated EFS rates are as follows:

• Scanbaltic → Red Sea: USD 185 per dry TEU; USD 275 per reefer TEU

• Scanbaltic → East Africa: USD 295 per dry TEU; USD 440 per reefer TEU

• Northern Europe (including UK) → Red Sea: USD 125 per dry TEU; USD 190 per reefer TEU

• Northern Europe (including UK) → East Africa: USD 240 per dry TEU; USD 355 per reefer TEU

MSC confirms that these surcharges are strictly cost-reflective and time-bound, with no further adjustments anticipated within the stated validity period.
