According to Maersk, inland storage facilities at the port are operating at near-capacity due to a seasonal surge in citrus-related logistics activity. This has resulted in extended dwell times for warehouse loading and unloading operations, thereby impairing the reliability and timeliness of inland transportation services.  

The surcharge amounts to EUR 65 per import reefer container and applies exclusively to the following movements:  

— Direct deliveries to warehouses located within the Port of Algeciras;  

— Deliveries following customs or phytosanitary inspections conducted within the port area.  

The IPI is strictly limited to import refrigerated containers and does not extend to dry cargo or export shipments.  

Implementation timelines differ by regulatory jurisdiction:  

— For non-FMC-regulated shipments, the surcharge becomes effective on 19 August 2026 and is scheduled to remain in effect until 30 September 2026;  

— For FMC-regulated shipments, it takes effect on 19 September 2026 and is expected to apply through 31 October 2026.  

Maersk reserves the right to review and adjust the surcharge period based on real-time assessment of port congestion levels and operational conditions at the Port of Algeciras.
