Hapag-Lloyd will implement a new Panama Canal Surcharge, effective 17 October 2026, for containerized shipments originating from Oceania destined for the US East Coast and Latin America. The surcharge is set at USD 155 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU).
For shipments subject to regulatory oversight by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), including tariff filing and advance notice requirements, the effective date shall comply strictly with applicable FMC regulations. The surcharge will be applied in accordance with Hapag-Lloyd’s published tariff provisions and will be itemized separately on freight invoices issued to customers.
At this time, Hapag-Lloyd has not disclosed the specific operational or economic rationale underlying the introduction of this surcharge.
