CMA CGM updates emergency fuel surcharge levels
2026-03-20

CMA CGM has announced an update to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) levels, effective 27 March 2026 (based on cargo loading date), in response to a sustained and substantial increase in global bunker fuel prices—driven primarily by heightened geopolitical tensions in the Near East and Middle East regions.

This revision follows the initial implementation of the EFS on 16 March 2026 and reflects continued volatility in global fuel markets over recent weeks. The updated surcharge structure remains subject to applicable regulatory approvals and will remain in effect until further notice.

Under the revised framework:

• For head-haul long-haul services:

  1. USD 265 / EUR 230 per TEU for dry containers;

  2. USD 320 / EUR 275 per TEU for refrigerated (reefer) containers.

• For back-haul long-haul services:

  1. USD 130 / EUR 110 per TEU for dry containers;

  2. USD 155 / EUR 135 per TEU for refrigerated containers.

• For intra-regional trades:

  1. USD 130 / EUR 110 per TEU for dry containers;

  2. USD 155 / EUR 135 per TEU for refrigerated containers.

Special cargo is also subject to the updated EFS:

• Out-of-gauge (OOG) shipments:

  1. Head-haul: USD 450 (20-ft unit) / USD 900 (40-ft unit);

  2. Back-haul and intra-regional: USD 155 (20-ft unit) / USD 310 (40-ft unit).

• Breakbulk cargo (excluding roll-on/roll-off):

  1. Head-haul: USD 265 per TEU utilized or lost;

  2. Back-haul and intra-regional: USD 130 per TEU utilized or lost.

CMA CGM emphasizes that this adjustment is grounded in objective market developments—including persistent fuel price inflation and associated operational cost pressures—and reaffirms its commitment to transparent, data-informed surcharge management. The EFS will be reviewed periodically and adjusted as warranted by evolving fuel cost trends and regulatory requirements.
