Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has placed an order for twelve 13,600-TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels with Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., formalized on 30 April 2026 during a signing ceremony in Shanghai. This strategic investment represents a pivotal milestone in OOCL’s decarbonization roadmap and marks the company’s first deployment of LNG-powered vessels.
The newbuilds are equipped with advanced dual-fuel main engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as conventional marine distillate and residual fuels—ensuring operational flexibility amid evolving fuel infrastructure and regulatory landscapes. Upon delivery, they will constitute OOCL’s inaugural LNG-powered fleet segment.
The decision follows a comprehensive assessment of three interrelated factors: (i) increasingly stringent international and regional environmental regulations, including IMO 2023 GHG Strategy targets; (ii) the maturity and scalability of alternative marine fuels, with LNG serving as a transitional yet commercially viable low-carbon option; and (iii) the rapid expansion of global LNG bunkering infrastructure, particularly across key Asia–Europe and trans-Pacific corridors.
Beyond emissions reduction, the vessels will enhance OOCL’s fleet agility and long-term network resilience. Their capacity and design support growth initiatives across emerging markets, regional trades, and third-country routes—enabling more responsive capacity allocation and improved service coverage. Collectively, they reinforce OOCL’s ability to meet evolving customer expectations for sustainable, reliable, and adaptable ocean transportation.
Commenting on the announcement, OOCL Chief Executive Officer Mr. Tao Weidong emphasized that this order underscores the company’s steadfast commitment to responsible shipping and its active participation in the maritime energy transition. The initiative aligns with both corporate sustainability objectives and broader industry-wide efforts to advance net-zero shipping—without compromising safety, schedule integrity, or supply chain continuity.
