Bulker attacked off Iran approaching Hormuz
2026-05-05

A Liberian-flagged bulk carrier, identified as the Minoan Falcon, was attacked by multiple small, fast-moving vessels approximately 11 nautical miles west of Sirik Port, Iran, at 11:30 UTC on 3 May.

The vessel was transiting northward toward the Strait of Hormuz at the time of the incident. According to a UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) alert, the master reported the attack; all crew members are confirmed safe, and no environmental damage or pollution has been reported.

AIS tracking data from Pole Star Global indicates that the vessel ceased transmitting its Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal shortly after the incident. This modus operandi—coordinated harassment or assault by swarms of small craft—is consistent with tactics previously employed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN), notably in the 22 April seizures of the container vessels Epaminondas and MSC Francesca, both of which were subsequently directed to Sirik Port.

The 3 May incident marks the first reported hostile act against a commercial vessel in proximity to the Strait of Hormuz since those earlier seizures.
