CMA box ship attacked in Strait of Hormuz
2026-05-07

CMA CGM confirms that its container vessel M/V CMA CGM SAN ANTONIO sustained damage and that multiple crew members sustained injuries following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz on 5 May 2026. The vessel was transiting the waterway en route from the Gulf of Oman to the Persian Gulf when the event occurred. All injured personnel have been safely evacuated and are currently receiving appropriate medical care.

The Strait of Hormuz—through which approximately 20% of globally traded oil and a significant volume of containerized cargo pass annually—remains a high-risk maritime corridor amid ongoing regional geopolitical tensions. Recent developments involving multiple state and non-state actors have contributed to elevated navigational risk in the area.

CMA CGM has implemented enhanced maritime security protocols across its fleet operating in the region. This includes real-time threat monitoring, mandatory voyage risk assessments, rerouting where operationally feasible, and coordination with naval task forces and industry-led initiatives such as the Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa (MSCHOA). To date, the company reports that 14 of its vessels were temporarily detained or delayed in the Gulf region at the onset of heightened hostilities; a prior incident involving another CMA CGM vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on 9 April 2026 resulted in warning fire but no casualties or material damage.

Independent verification of the 5 May incident by international maritime authorities—including the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and the International Maritime Bureau (IMB)—is currently pending. CMA CGM continues to cooperate fully with relevant national and international bodies in their investigation.
