Maersk Boxship Collides With Feeder at Chattogram
2026-05-07

On 1 May 2026, the Maersk-operated container vessel "Maersk Chattogram" (2,700 TEU, Singapore-flagged) collided with the feeder vessel "HR Turag" (1,000 TEU, Bangladesh-flagged) near the outer anchorage area of the Port of Chattogram, Bangladesh. The incident occurred at approximately 09:30 local time while "Maersk Chattogram" was approaching the pilot boarding station.

Preliminary visual assessment indicates a substantial breach in the starboard quarter hull plating of "Maersk Chattogram", with no reported injuries among crew members aboard either vessel. According to statements provided to TBS News by the vessel’s crew, structural damage is confined to the external hull; propulsion, steering, and navigational systems remain fully operational.

Following standard incident protocols, "Maersk Chattogram" will complete cargo discharge at Chattogram prior to undergoing formal damage assessment and repair planning. Maersk’s local representative confirmed this course of action to Bangladeshi authorities, including the Ministry of Shipping and the Chattogram Port Authority.

"HR Turag", originally built in 1999 and formerly operated by Maersk under the name *Maersk Arun*, was reflagged to Bangladesh in 2023. Vessel inspection records indicate no recent Port State Control (PSC) examinations, consistent with its current engagement in domestic or regional short-sea trade.

"Maersk Chattogram", a sub-Panamax container ship delivered in 2012, has recorded minor deficiencies during routine inspections over the past three years—none affecting seaworthiness or safety-critical systems. As of 6 May 2024, the vessel remains berthed alongside a container terminal on the Chattogram waterfront pending further technical evaluation.
