Hapag-Lloyd has officially inaugurated a new country office in Cotonou, Benin—marking a strategic enhancement of its operational footprint in West Africa. The office commenced operations on 20 May and enables the company to deliver direct, localized customer support and customized maritime logistics solutions across the region.
This expansion reflects Benin’s growing significance as a regional trade hub. Sustained macroeconomic growth, coupled with substantial public and private investment in port infrastructure, customs modernization, and cross-border transport corridors, has elevated the Port of Cotonou to a pivotal maritime gateway—not only for Benin but also for landlocked neighboring economies, including Burkina Faso and Niger.
Previously, Hapag-Lloyd served the Beninese market through its broader West African regional structure. The establishment of a dedicated national office represents a deliberate shift toward greater operational agility, deeper market responsiveness, and more precise alignment with local regulatory, commercial, and logistical requirements. This initiative directly supports Hapag-Lloyd’s “Strategy 2030”, which emphasizes sustainable growth in high-potential emerging markets and the strengthening of customer partnerships through on-the-ground expertise and service localization.
Jesper Kanstrup, Managing Director – Sub-Region Africa, Hapag-Lloyd, stated: “The opening of our Benin office is a key milestone in advancing our long-term commitment to West Africa. As a strategically positioned logistics corridor under Strategy 2030, Benin offers compelling opportunities for scalable, value-added shipping services. With this permanent local presence, we are better positioned to collaborate closely with customers, authorities, and partners—and to contribute meaningfully to the region’s trade integration and economic development.”
