These premiums, levied in addition to standard tolls, underscore the Canal’s evolving role as a critical bottleneck—and de facto price-setting mechanism—in global trade logistics, particularly amid ongoing disruptions to energy and containerized cargo flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to verified reports from the Panama Canal Authority and independent shipbroking firms, a recent Neopanamax-class slot was awarded at USD 4 million, exceeding even the peak levels observed during the severe drought-induced capacity constraints of late 2023. Average auction premiums have also surged markedly: from a pre-Hormuz conflict range of USD 135,000–140,000 per slot, they rose to USD 385,000–425,000 in April–May 2026, with select energy cargoes—particularly LNG and refined petroleum products—commanding multimillion-dollar bids.
The Panama Canal Authority has clarified that these elevated prices stem not from official tariff adjustments or systemic congestion, but from acute, market-driven urgency among operators seeking to mitigate extended waiting times and schedule uncertainty.
The surge is predominantly driven by energy-related traffic: Asian importers, diversifying away from Middle Eastern crude and refined fuel supplies, are increasingly sourcing from U.S. export terminals—thereby rerouting tankers, LNG carriers, and LPG vessels through the Canal.
Panama Canal Administrator Ricaurte Vásquez confirmed that one fuel-carrying vessel originally scheduled for European discharge was diverted to Singapore, prompting its operator to secure expedited transit via the record-setting premium. Rising transit costs were a key topic at the Geneva Dry Conference last month.
Rob Aarvold, Chief Executive Officer of dry bulk operator Legasea, noted that certain Capesize and Panamax bulk carriers faced waiting periods exceeding 30 days for non-priority passage. “Shippers are now forced to factor in either substantial auction premiums, extended laytime costs, or forward booking up to three months in advance,” Aarvold stated during the conference plenary.
