Maersk launches new China-Australia service
2026-05-27

The service operates a streamlined port rotation comprising Shanghai, Sydney, and Melbourne, delivering enhanced schedule reliability, reduced end-to-end transit times, and additional capacity on one of the most strategically significant corridors in the Asia-Pacific trade region.

Qilin is purpose-built to complement Maersk’s established Dragon service, which remains fully operational with no changes to its current schedule or scope. While Dragon continues to serve customers prioritizing proven reliability and broad coverage across the China–Australia trade, Qilin addresses growing demand for time-sensitive logistics—specifically targeting shippers requiring faster, more frequent, and highly predictable sailings between core gateway ports.

Transit time improvements are substantial in both directions:

  • Shanghai → Sydney: reduced from 18 days (Dragon) to 14 days (Qilin);

  • Shanghai → Melbourne: reduced from 21 days to 17 days;

  • Sydney → Shanghai: reduced from 28 days to 19 days;

  • Melbourne → Shanghai: reduced from 24 days to 15 days.

This strategic expansion underscores Maersk’s long-term commitment to the Australian market and reinforces its product-differentiation approach—tailoring service attributes to distinct customer segments and supply chain requirements. By adding dedicated capacity between China’s largest port and Australia’s two principal metropolitan gateways, Qilin strengthens Maersk’s ability to support scalable, resilient trade growth for its customers.

Vessel deployment specifications and booking availability will be announced prior to the inaugural sailing on July 24, 2026.
