Maersk ups the ante: mandatory security fee imposed on North America export cargo
2026-08-22

This surcharge is intended to recover terminal-level security-related costs incurred in connection with the handling of export containers.

The applicable rate will depend on the country of loading:

• US-originating cargo: USD 15 per laden export container

• Canadian-originating cargo: USD 12 per laden export container

For cargo subject to U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) regulation—including exempt cargo loaded at U.S. ports—the surcharge will apply based on the date Maersk assumes possession of the final container covered under the bill of lading.

For cargo loaded in Canada, the surcharge will apply based on the vessel’s scheduled sailing date.

Unless otherwise instructed by the customer in writing, the surcharge will be collected on a prepaid basis.
