Unbelievable! Freight rates to Europe from 11 East African countries are going up!
2026-08-24

Rationale for the surcharge

Maersk attributes the introduction of this surcharge to sustained capacity constraints and prevailing market conditions impacting import volumes into North Europe.

Covered origin countries include Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Eligible destination markets are Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland.

The applicable pricing date for the PSS is 17 September 2026.

As stipulated by Maersk, the PSS constitutes a component of the total ocean freight charge and will be invoiced in accordance with the agreed freight payment terms for each shipment.

In addition to the PSS, other charges—including contractual, local regulatory, and contingency-related fees—may apply, subject to individual shipment terms and applicable regulations.
