PIL's two LNG dual-fuel giant vessels officially enter service
2026-06-28

Pacific International Lines (PIL) has formally commissioned two newly built 13,000-TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG)-dual-fuel container vessels—“Kota Elok” and “Kota Elan”—at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Shanghai, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing fleet modernisation and decarbonisation programme.

These vessels are the first of a series of 13 advanced dual-fuel ships ordered to enhance PIL’s global network capacity, improve operational efficiency, and advance its long-term sustainability objectives—including net-zero emissions by 2050.

Assigned to PIL’s Asia–South America trade lane—a corridor witnessing sustained cargo volume growth—the vessels will support increasing customer demand while strengthening service reliability, schedule integrity, and end-to-end supply chain resilience.

Equipped to operate on both LNG and low-sulphur fuel oil, the vessels significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with conventional marine fuels. Their propulsion and auxiliary systems comply with IMO Tier III NOx standards and incorporate abatement technologies aligned with PIL’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments.

Commenting on the delivery, Lars Kastrup, Chief Executive Officer of PIL, stated: “The naming of ‘Kota Elok’ and ‘Kota Elan’ underscores PIL’s accelerated commitment to fleet renewal and sustainable growth. These vessels reflect our strategic focus on delivering scalable capacity, energy-efficient operations, and enhanced value for customers across high-potential trade corridors.”

Technologically advanced, the vessels feature an optimised hull form, air-resistant bow design (including a dedicated bow windshield on “Kota Elok” to reduce aerodynamic drag), low-friction hull coatings, and integrated energy recovery systems. They also incorporate AI-enabled performance monitoring and IoT-based predictive maintenance platforms to support real-time decision-making and operational optimisation.

Further reinforcing PIL’s human-centred approach, the vessels incorporate upgraded crew accommodation, ergonomic workspaces, improved ventilation and noise-reduction measures—all designed to enhance onboard safety, well-being, and retention.
